Bizzare issue with WMV file
Hi Folks,
A client just sent me a WMV file to edit for them. I went to place the footage in the timeline and Sony Vegas 8 shut down. Upon further review, the properties of the video show frame size, frame rate, date created, etc., but there is no length. Length shows 00:00:00.
It is a 1 GB file that will actually play in Window Media Player (it’s a 30 minute clip) but is obviously missing something. In fact, if you try to click on the bar to advance the clip, it just starts over.
Is this some weird missing codec issue? If so, why does it play anyway? Any way of salvaging this or do I have to see if the client can re-render the footage on their end?
Never ran into this one before so any guidance is greatly appreciated.

First, if the client rendered this file just for you… tell them NOT to use WMV. WMV is a highly compressed final delivery format and is horrible for editing. I would have them re-render to something else. What else, depends on where the footage comes from, if it’s SD or HD, etc. They should use in intraframe codec like DV or Motion-JPEG, Huffyuv, Lagarith, or CineForm for best results.
If you can’t get them to re-render in another format, try using any one of a number of free converters to convert the video to something else. I like to use AviDemux for jobs like this but MPEG Slipstream might work well too.
