I have tried importing footage from a tape on a few different decks into a few a different systems, and every time the audio, once imported and played back through the system, sounds crunchy and distorted, like it’s being clipped, or maybe there is a bad connection from the mic when it was recorded. But when I play it back through the camera or the deck, it sounds perfect. I’ve had people say it may be a bit rate problem, and I don’t know if it’s true or not, or how to fix it if it is. Has anyone had this problem? I would greatly appreciate any help.

If your audio capture setting doesn’t match the source setting very often you’ll experience glitches in the way you’ve described. With Mini DV for example, there are 2 formats: 16bit 48k or 12bit 32k. You need to find out what setting the audio was recorded at and match the capture settings in the NLE.

Is there ANY chance you are monitoring this thru two different paths? Have you had this problem before or with any other sounds coming out of your computer?

I mean, what it sounds like is a LINE/MIC level discrepancy — but I don’t have an idea why.

More than likely — you shot 32/12 and something is trying to compensate.

    Hmmm

    Go with Don’s answer.
