Bit OT: small free app to work with (sub)titles from FCP
Hi all,
I’ve created a little app for a long time customer who wanted to get the subtitles out off a timeline as rendered graphics to use them with an EDL in Avid and as ‘graphic STL’ with DVDSP.
I will integrate that into my TEP but until I have done that it will be a free app.
As said above gReorder is little tool to transport your subtitles or titles from Final Cut Pro to DVD Studio Pro via STL or with an EDL to other NLEs.
With transport to graphic STL it is assumed that your titles are colored white with a black outline — but you may experiment with that.It works only ‘half-automatic’ — but it’s a fast process.
Step 1: move your subtitles into a new sequence – make sure they are at track 1.
Step 2: make sure sequence settings are set correctly, use a codec which renders at best quality for graphics and supports an alpha channel.
Step 3: export this sequence as XML
Step 4: open this XML with gReorder, the app will ask you for destination folder. Select or create a new one. gReorder will create an XML and either an EDL or STL which matches the original TCs.
Step 5: open the newly created XML with FCP. You will find a sequence where every title is 1 frame long. With STL you will get a nested sequence where some video filters are applied. You may double check the ‘Channel Mixer’ settings.
Step 6: render the sequence — this takes only a few seconds even with hundreds of titles. (like 1500 titles in NTSC are 50 seconds of video)
Step 7: export the sequence as TIFF ‘Image Sequence’ to the folder you selected before. Make sure to click the ‘Insert space before number’.
Step 8: import the STL into DVD Studio Pro and apply the color settings to the stream. Or import the EDL into your NLE and reconnect the graphics. This little app works with FCP 6 and higher for STL, but will work with any version above 4.1 for EDL. Be aware that DVDSP graphics only do support 4 colors.
