Bit Depth of the 5D and other HDSLR
Hello,
I am writing a research paper on the movement of the industry to HDSLR cameras. I am currently comparing their compressed output to the Alexa and the F35 so the readers will understand the difference between the output of a professional grade camera and what the DSLR cameras can offer. But I am having trouble finding the bit depth of the 5D and the 7D. I know that the chip is 14-bit, but I am sure that the codec doesn’t support this at 4:2:0. Does anyone know the bit depth of the 5D and the 7D (or any of the other DSLRs?) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

H.264 are compressed to 8-bit color space on the current Canons.
Let’s hope they will allow for 4:2:2 10-bit (or even 4:4:4 14-bit) on the next versions. Perhaps writing on two SD cards simultaneously or output to a separate recorder via SDI-out?
SDI-out / XLR-in is not likely to happen on the Canon 5D mark III, since still photographers (the core market for these cameras) wouldn’t know what to do with it. However, if Canon would build an accessory that allows DSLR shooters to purchase separately (much akin to the dual battery system), that would be the best of both worlds.
