Big Projects – Crashes – Out of Memory Error
2 x 3.2 Quad Core
16GB RAM
3 TB Internal
12 TB GTECH gSPEEDes (Raid 5) = 9.6 TB redundant
The project is HUGE –
started with a 12 hour timeline (max FCP would allow me to lay down.
3 months later I have it cut down to 5 hours and 50 tracks deep.
This is the 10th major (over 2 hours) detailed project I have made in the past 10 years.
All of the projects have had major issues – lost clips, vanishing clips, clips being replaced by other clips, crashing Hard Drives, exporting fiascos.. you name it..
My current project (HD/APPLE PRO RES/ shot on HMC 150/AVCHD) is by the far the biggest I have made (5 hours complete) and it was flawless until I was unable to RENDER.
I read through all the posts on the COW that I could find regarding this issue..
What solved my problem was making the project file SMALLER.
I reduced it from 400+ MBs to 190MB.
I read it hear at the COW!
SO, I removed all sequences from the project that were not necessary.. and walah… it is rendering perfectly.
I let it render for about 3 hours, then I “CANCEL”, and “SAVE”. Then I start rendering again. I do this because the worst thing that can happen is 3 days of rendering and then a CRASH. YOU LOSE EVERYTHING!
When this problem first started I could usually fix it by just quitting and restarting FCP 6.06. Eventually the problem got so bad that it just crashed after 1-2 minutes of rendering.
THANKS COW!
I hope this post helps somebody. Or even better, that is is never necessary 🙂
