When working with an AVI saved from Windows Movie Maker there is a black rectangle superimposed on the preview window. It’s in the upper left, slightly less than half the width of the window, and ends above the bottom of the window. Can I buy a clue?

    TIA

Is it possible you have the “split screen” option turned on? It’s one of the buttons just above the preview screen.

It was not that, but you got me started pushing buttons. It seems I had checked “clipboard” in the Auto Preview options, and then somehow drawn a rectangle on the preview window. When I checked “FX Bypassed” instead of “clipboard” the rectangle disappeared.

    Thanks –

Yes, that is a FEATURE. It allows you to see a “before” and “after” view. It will be whereever YOU draw the rectangle. It can also show the clipboard allowing you to compare two clips for color correction purposes. Do a search in the help on that button and you’ll get all kinds of good information.
