It’s possible in AviDemux and VirtualDub and FCP (I hear). Is it possible in Vegas?

Split Screen is good, but it doesn’t enable me to see and compare the pre and post-edit versions.

If I understand your question correctly, you can either “pre-render” a section or “render to a new track”.

Split screen does EXACTLY that, you can see pre/post edit versions across the same frame, which in my opinion, is actually more valuable.
When you hit the “by pass FX” button in the preview window, you can choose the pre/post areas you’re observing, and therefore see critical detail both before and after color correction or other filtering.
You’re looking for something other than that behavior?

    Douglas,

Split Screen lets me see the right or left half, but it can’t show me the whole frame with fx bypassed (input) AND the whole frame with fx included (output).

When I see Split Screen, I have to guess as to how the other half appears.

Then select the entire frame, and toggle post/pre. Methinks you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. Can you give me an example of why you’d need to see an ENTIRE set of frames pre/post? Personally, I find it more accurate to be able to define a specific area that I’d like to see pre/post combined.

    ( . . apologies for butting-in . . but . . )

Jill, are you asking for a DUAL or 2 Preview screens that shows in ONE screen PRE and in the OTHER POST? Is that it? Vegas does not have 2 Preview screens. But, as others have said, you get to see within ONE screen (this is good for screen real estate!) the following:

    * Left or Right

    * ON or OFF of Fxs

    * OR – you might like this – left DRAG and you can manually select what part of the screen you wish to view

    * OR – use the “Copy to Clipboard” and us this to compare some part of the Timeline to that which is being revealed by the Cursor

But if I am correct, and having read and re-read your question/s, and that you are after 2 full Preview screens, then no, Vegas has not had this.

However, if you ARE after this, then the NEW Trimmer Feature will provide a workaround at “best” and maybe an annoyance at “worst”. Trimmer now has a Monitor option, and IF you open the Event in Trimmer you DO get the pre- Preview but in the main Timeline you can get the post. I can “place” the Trimmer window near to the Main Preview, adjust its size and shape and get 2 Monitors. Not ideal, and something of a workaround.

    Grazie

    Douglas,

I think I’m making a molehill out of a molehill – it’s not big, but it’s bigger than nothing.

I ask, in part, because a video editor whom I know personally and who will be checking out my work – he uses Final Cut Pro, and I want the workspace to be as familiar as possible for him, or at least I want to be able to produce the functionality he expects.

From what you wrote I think I may need to clarify that I wasn’t thinking so much about single-frame comparison as running-video comparison.

You ask a good question: Can I give an example of why I would need to play two videos side-by-side?
At first I thought: Don’t you ever want to show a client, or yourself, two alternatives?
Now I think it’s generally true that it’s best to watch the videos sequentially, not simultaneously.

Still, seeing videos side-by-side might in some cases be a faster process, and make it easier to see differences – to compare.

Since FCP (and VirtualDub and AVIDemux and perhaps others) has dual monitor-windows, surely there is some reason for having two.

    Also, you wrote:
“I find it more accurate to be able to define a specific area that I’d like to see pre/post combined.”
I only know how to display part of the frame pre, and the rest post – are you saying there is a way to display part of the frame pre and that same part of the frame post?

    Thank you,
    Jill

    Grazie,
Yes I want one screen showing pre and one screen showing post.

Your workaround almost works, but I can’t get both to play, can I?
I don’t want to compare just one frame, I want to see them running, then perhaps pause both to analyse a frame or two, then continue playing. I turned on the trimmer’s own monitor, but I can’t get both the trimmer’s own monitor and the main preview monitor to run.

Thanks for teaching me I can left-click and drag to create a section on the preview screen – it’s not what I’m seeking but yes I like that.

I don’t think you need to read the reply I just posted to Douglas, but if you wish:

    Thanks for the suggestions,

Jill, I have BOTH playing on Loops!

Quite neat, actually. And having them Loop I can adjust an Fx in realtime and compare WHOLE moving frames with the pre- within the Trimmer and post within the Timeline Previewer.

So, Looping and Realtime Adjustment being seen in pre- and post- conditions simultaneously. And I have them set up about 10cms square directly next to each other.

. . or set up a Multi Screen using several Tracks. You can apply realtime Fxs and so on. I just threw together a 2×2 with a mix of Fxs on each Event.

    Has this been suggested?

    Grazie,
Good news – I like that. It seems I need you to tell me:
what do you press that starts both playing at the same time?

Maybe you gave me that answer in talking about loops, but I tried looping sections in both the trimmer and timeline and then pressing (a) “L” and (b) spacebar, and neither (a) nor (b) got both previewers playing. I tried once with the focus on the timeline, and once with the focus on the trimmer.

    Jill 🙂
