For those post pros using a JVC 720p HDV workflow beware of latest “Pro App” upgrade. I can no longer capture HDV footage using my JVC BR-HD50 deck or my JVC HDVcam.

Everything works fine in FCP 6.0.2

So while I’m waiting on a FCP re-install, I thought I’d post this warning out there to save anyone the entire day of agony that I’ve gone through!

This is a bit off-topic, but I’ve had a couple of customers bring me JVC cameras (pro and consumer) to capture footage from, and I can never find a way to control the camera from FCP. Does FCP recognize JVC cameras?

Because we own the JVC GY110U Cam, and BR-HD50 Deck combo, I’ve never captured straight from the cam before. So I’m not sure. In the specs, you are supposed to be able to control the cam using IEEE 1394. It is supposed to support timecode. But again, I’ve never tested.

Chris the camera and the deck are both controllable
via firewire if the HDV 720 30P easy setup is loaded.

The br-hd50u deck is also controllable over RS422.

Mathew your saying you can’t capture at all
    HDV 30P via firewire?

Importing the footage via firewire as HDV720p ProRes seems to resolve the dropped frames and broken clips problem this camera is notorious for. You also retain timecode using this method.

    Chris,

The footage I was attempting to capture was 24p using the HDV 720p 24 set up. I didn’t have any 30p to test. DV-NTSC captured fine though in the BR-HD50 with FCP 6.0.3

On my other machine still running 6.0.2, the HDV 24p captured just fine.
