  • BEWARE… Final Cut 5.1 Universal files not compatable with FCP 5.0.4!

Posted by Harley17 on April 10, 2006 at 4:01 pm

Just a note to people who are considering the 5.1 version of FCP. FCP 5.0.4 does not recognize 5.1 files. This is a major blunder on Apple’s part. I could understand if ver. 6 was not compatable, but 5.1 should still run.

I know an upgrade from 5.0.4 to 5.1 is available, but not many are going to go that way when you have to pay and don’t need it and FCP 6 is on its way.

Apple needs to fix this ASAP for the professional market.

I hope this helps you avoid the problem I am having.

This has been well documented & is no surprise.

The upgrade as discussed below is a bit of a no brainer especially when there will be no more upgrades to the previous PPC version.

There is already a Motion update, so I’d suggest you send off your install disks asap.

It has been this way for some time. Any time there is an update that you have to pay for, that update isn’t backwards compatible. Well, even FCP 4.5 files won’t open in FCP 4.0, so that statement isn’t true.

Pretty much any major update (and this is a major update) won’t open with previous versions.

As Peter said….this is a no brainer.

If you want to call it a no brainer, that is your choice (a bit condescending). I have a brain and it was not made clear on the Apple site. This does cause problems for professionals adapting to intel Macs.

To me this isn’t an upgrade, but the only way to go with an intel based mac. Apple is doing a bit of a poor job supporting the transition.

Having bought FCP 5.1, I was NEVER told anywhere that 5.0.4 would not open the new 5.1 files.

I just wanted others to now the issues involved with the transition. I wish somebody had posted this info for me.

[CodyLucido] “Apple is doing a bit of a poor job supporting the transition.”

You think so? I think it is an excellent deal for everybody to get to the same level of software PPC or Intel.

[CodyLucido] “I know an upgrade from 5.0.4 to 5.1 is available, but not many are going to go that way when you have to pay and don’t need it and FCP 6 is on its way.”

Says who? and how do you know if FCP 6 is on its way? I would have thought that every FCP user is looking into the upgrade, or indeed has already mailed the disks off. Lets face it, if you can afford FCS and a Mac to run it on then the price of the upgrade shouldn’t worry you.

So if you have bought 5.1 what is your problem?

It’s on the Apple website in the “Late Breaking News” PDF you can download about FCP 5.1. From Page 6:

Final Cut Pro 5.1 Project Format
The Final Cut Pro 5.1 project format has been updated, so you cannot open
Final Cut Pro 5.1 projects in previous versions of Final Cut Pro.

Pretty straightforward information right there and you should ALWAYS read the Late Breaking news bulletins for ANY software you purchase, Apple or otherwise.

And you should be able to use XML export to take a 5.1 project to 5.0.4.

That a later version of a software breaks compatibility with and older version is quite “standard” I’d say. What Apple could do, as a “bonus” or what ever, is having a “save as version X” and then just discard whatever features that are not avaliable in the previous version.

As someone stated though you CAN do this, sort of, with the XML-export (worked between 4.5 <-> 5.0 for me on a project perfectly).

No-one know if FCP6 is just around the corner

[Peter Wiggins] “Says who? and how do you know if FCP 6 is on its way?”

What’s interesting is that we’re less than 2 weeks from NAB and there is no announcement of an Apple Event on the Apple website. I also asked a few friends and they haven’t heard of one scheduled either.

So either Apple is being really secretive about it and holding off an announcement till the last moment, or FCP 6 is not near ready to even be shown.
