Better to copy over P2 to folder or import into Final Cut Pro 5
Posted by Chris Mcguinness on June 9, 2006 at 6:42 amFor on set work flow with Powerbook 1.67, would it be better to import clips from P2 into Final Cut Pro or to drag the contents from the P2 onto the hardrive? Any thoughts?
thanks you,

June 9, 2006 at 7:03 amAlways best to copy the files from the P2 card to an external hard drive and keep that drive. THEN import onto another drive that you will then edit from. This way you have a backup of the original files.

June 9, 2006 at 4:35 pmThank you for the information.
I have set up 4 – 400 GB drives into 2 SoftRAID RAID 1 sets so we have 2 400 GB drives that will provide mirror backups.
we don’t have enough space to use your technique and would want to look at footage on set and immediately that night. If we go the direct to FCP import from P2, than proof the clips, check lip sync – scrub each clip and check numbers to take list, do you think this would be ok… I have already done this technique with 5 hours of footage between P2 and P2 store and had no issue, just would like to hear your thoughts…
thank you,

June 9, 2006 at 4:45 pmSure you can do that but the safety margin is much lower because you’re essentially using your masters for everything with no backups. If you need immediate on-set playback I highly recommend HD Log or a Firewire capture to FCP.

June 9, 2006 at 11:38 pmYeah, I too highly recommend HD LOG. The Bronze version allows for viewing of the MXF footage without importing into FCP.
And really, you should back up the P2 cards onto external drives and save all the info. What if down the line you no longer use FCP? What if you need to use the footage on another NLE? Then you are stuck with the quicktime and converting and losing quality. What if you loose a media drive? Then your masters are lost forever
Get extra drives. These are in essence your tape masters, while the imported footage is just captured media.
Cover your butt.

June 10, 2006 at 5:05 pmWe decided to break the mirror raid and capture copy over to one drive, then immediately import the P2 to FCP on the other…
thank you Noah and Shane, your time is appreciated.
