  • Better to convert VOD to MOV or AVI for Premiere CS2?

Posted by Gavino on June 18, 2007 at 9:02 am

    Greetings,

I am just wondering if it is worthwhile converting the VOD footage I obtain from my DVD camcorder to a lossless compression format such as mov or avi before editing it in Adobe Premiere Pro CS2.

    Thanks.

    Gavino,

    1. VOD or VOB?
    2. AVI or MOV can be lossless or lossy depending on the codec. DV or MOV AVI is a lossy codec. Uncompressed AVI is technically a lossless codec.
    3. Nop, its not worthwhile because the source is compressed anyway. I would go for DV codec, AVI or MOV.

    Hope that helps…

Change the .vob file extension to .mpg then import into Ppro2

    Thanks for your swift response.

I have come to understand that my purchase of a DVD camcorder was a bad one considering my desire to edit footage through Premiere Pro CS2. I was hoping that there was a way that I could uncompress the VOB footage I obtain from my camera, then edit it before compressing it into its final form. As it stands, my final output from PRemiere Pro is a compressed version (MPEG-2) of already compressed footage (MPEG-2). That doesn’t sound healthy! Any advice?

If you are going to have the cam for a while you might want to look into videoredo.com it uses smart rendering so impact is minimal to the Mpeg video
