Best way to remove hum from audio clip in FCP

Depends on the kind of HUM.

But start with (are you ready?) the “Hum Remover” filter.

Try removing the various “harmonics” and listen to how it sounds after each change.

You’ll have to play around with it, tsylla.

It’s unlikely that your specific hum will be removed with the default settings. It depends on the source of the hum, really. It’ll take some futzing.

Otherwise, look into Reduce Noise in SoundTrack Pro’s manual.

Depends much on the characteristics, but soundsoap (a commersial plug) and some eq’ing could be a route if the other suggestions don’t pan out.

soundtrack pro is your ticket. I had to remove a terrible earthing hum on an interview last week. the reduce noise feature in Soundtrack was just incredible….highlight the hum in the soundtrack pro timeline, go to process and select set noise print, then reduce noise….heaps of control to elimintate the hum.

the only downside is that you may experience some audio artifacts…these can mostly be fixed with EQ.

Hmmm — maybe cancel my last request for help in removing hum — my real challenge in Soundtrack Pro seemed to be highlighting/selecting the portion to be dealt with — I may have managed to do it by adding a marker at that point, placing the timeline cursor over it and then using the ‘Set Noise Print’ and ‘Reduce Noise’ options. The machine is processing things (slowly — how long does this take on a short clip?) now so I’ll see what happens — if anyone wants to confirm my approach or otherwise add input, great — thanks—

Tom, if it makes you feel better, I also found it hard at first figuring out when Soundtrack Pro had my sound print and when it was applied….
