Best way to put files on the self
Posted by Jack Fox on September 9, 2006 at 2:42 amI know tapes are a good option, but I would like to keep my captured media for a while and wondering what is the most efficient way to do it. What kind of drive/media would be best? I probably have about a terabyte of captured media that needs to be shelved.

September 9, 2006 at 3:00 amI just buy a ATA or SATA drive for each client, or each project, and then add new ones as needed for backup from my RAID’s. I like to buy bare drives and connect them using Wiebetech’s cool DriveDocks: https://www.wiebetech.com/home.php

September 9, 2006 at 8:27 amWow, that’s the exact same drive enclosure I got but it’s about twice the price by the time you add in the power supply and all the cables. Check it out here at $109 all inclusive. Add some hitachi 7200rpm sata drives from mwave.com for $75 a piece and you’ve got pretty cheap archiving storage.

“Hi Frank,
There are definitely cheaper enclosures than Wiebetech’s, but what I was recommending as a possible option was Wiebetech’s DriveDock’s – like their ComboDock. I couldn’t link right to the page its on, but if you click the DriveDocks button on their website you’ll see what I use. It’s quicker/easier to switch out bare drives with this solution in my experience. However, there’s nothing wrong with getting a standard enclosure or doing it another way. I just presented what I’ve been using the last couple years and it works well.

September 10, 2006 at 1:23 pmThis bare bones option reminds me that I have a western digital portable enclosure with a drive that went south. All I need to do is strip out the interface and I can swap drives when needed.
