  • Best way to preview a composite key on location?

In the near future, we plan to shoot period-costumed actors against a portable blue or green screen in daylight exterior for compositing onto backplates of actual exterior locations already taped and captured. Format is Varicam 720 24P. Editing on FCP 5. What’s the best approach to being able to view a WYSIWYG composite image right in the field as we shoot? We’re in good shape monitor-wise with Cinema Displays linked to the Varicams through ecinema boxes via HD/SDI. But how do we pull off the preview in terms of set-up, software and additional hardware? There are so many compositing solutions available now, we’d love some input from folks who have been there, done that. Program will utiltimately air 720 24 over 60 D5. Software should be sophisticated enough to handle tricky issues like smoke in the foreground of the front plate shot. Cost-efficiency with a great look is the goal. Many thanks. Jim

You can’t do it realtime, but you should be able to do a quick capture and then render some of the effects.

I don’t think it’s important that you see your keying capabilities in the filed, just my opinion though. What you need is a good lighting crew that can use a good light meter, proper green screen material or paint, proper camera setup and a crew of experienced costumers who understand the whole green screen process. Being able to preview the software output in the filed might be nice but it will be too late to do anything about any serious design screwups.

You can rent a good hardware keyer for your location to get a good idea of what will happen when you go to post. But the number of tweaks and tricks you can do with today’s chromakeying tools can save lots of messy shoots.

Hope you get better advice and please stop back by and let us know how you made out.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
