Best way to handle mixed formats on timeline
Usually all media comes from one camera so issue does not arise.
However putting some compilation videos together … these have a mixed bag of media files.Typically 1920x1080p AVC/mp4 59.94fps AAC audio
and 1280×720 AVC/mts 25fps Dolby AC3 audioI know I can mix these on the timeline, but a couple of what may be simple Q’s
# Would I be better to convert prior to using on timeline to make videos same framesize, fps & same codec
# If no need … then what should properties be set to … normally use match media settings – so which would I choose …. do I choose the one that matches the output ……. or if one doesn’t match, then set project settings to what I will be setting output as.
In this case will be loading on line for streaming from Vimeo.
I’ll use ‘Render As’ Sony AVC/MVC and I have 2 templates for Vimeo .. either
1920x1080p 29.97fps bitrate 12,000,000 or
1280x1080p 29.97fps bitrate 12,000,000 both using AAC audio -

That’s what any editor on a Mac would do… i.e., convert everything to ProRes 422 and edit happily without any problems. Unfortunately, the PC doesn’t have a common digital intermediary like ProRes so it’s not that simple. If your target is 29.97 fps you might want to render the 25 fps video to 29.97. Maybe use Sony MXF. This edits nicely in Vegas Pro and maintains good quality. Of course, Sony YUV was designed for this but the file sizes and huge.

When using mixed media, you should set you project to match your delivery format. This way there are no surprises when you go to render. What you see in the preview is what you will see when rendered.

What I may do is get all files to same format and save as Lagarith Lossless – huge files, but only used as intermediates.

Do a test to see how well Vegas Pro handles Lagarith on your computer first. You really only need to convert the files that don’t match the project properties.
