  • Best way to handle M2T files for Final Cut Express?

Posted by Clay Sandoz on September 21, 2009 at 8:52 am

I’m shooting on a Sony Z5-U recording to card using the additional compact flash recorder, which writes in M2T format, and editing in Final Cut Express. I’m currently using MPEG Streamclip to transcode to Apple Intermediate Codec, set to not scale and to 50% (100% gives the exact same image and file-size results). Unfortunately, due to the kind of shooting I’m doing, I don’t always have good lighting conditions, and therefore have some noise on my original video. When transcoded, the noise is even more pronounced.

I’ve seen ClipWrap, but it won’t actually re-wrap the clip without the Pro Codecs.

Are there any other options? If not, what’s the ideal setting for MPEG Streamclip to get the best looking video?

    Thanks.

Clay – Did you ever determine how to convert the M2T ?

I’ve stuck with using MPEG Streamclip with the above settings. MPEG Streamclip is free, but the MPEG 2 Codec is $20. Since the original post I’d done a little looking around for options and this seemed like the best.

Have you used any other options? Curious what others are doing…

I’m still trying to figure out what – if anything – is worth pursuing to convert this stuff. Or whether I’m going to just bring it into the system from tape (both a memory card and tape were recorded.)

    >> I have MPEG STream Clip but have not explored it much. Will it batch process the M2Ts ?

What I can’t figure out is why there are so many Sony cameras out there – if this is a problem for so many Final Cut Pro users. ( OR what I’m doing wrong.)

ClipWrap was mentioned to me in an earlier post. I’m going to take a look at that. I’ll let you know if I find something that’s fast and has quality.

Yeah, give clip wrap a shot. I’m using Final Cut Express, not Pro. The Express package doesn’t have the necessary codecs to “re-wrap” the clips to use directly in Final Cut, but the Pro suite does. I’m pretty sure Clip Wrap has a trial you can play around with first.

Yes – demo worked great. Also discovered SONY has plug-ins available that allow FCP to import the M2T from the Memory Recorder I used – here: https://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/ext/hdv/z7u_s270u_m35u/HVR-Z7U/unit_software.html#A2

I’m going to see if it will work once the M2T files are on my hard drive.
