  • Best way to extract and convert a frame from video for print use?

    Hello,

We have a few situations where we want to extract a scene frame from a video for printing (paper publications).

Obviously this is not going to provide a very good quality still image but over the years we have found a few tools that improve the situation.

A few years ago we found a program named Paparazzi that would extract and combine the data from several frames into one still – occasionally (but not always) this produced a better image than extracting just one frame. Unfortunately that software was made for use with old versions of Premiere and the company that produced it (Red Hawk Vision, Inc) seems to have disappeared.

We then used the program “Genuine Fractals” to interpolate the images up to a higher resolution, which seemed to produce a better quality enlarged image than just increasing the image size with Photoshop.

Does anyone know of a better way to do this, or know of software that works better than these two programs I’ve mentioned?

    Thanks.

    Jonathan,

Typically, I export the desired frame to bmp in Premiere, then go to Photoshop to de-interlace (I’m using Creative Suite CS2). I use interpolation and not duplication for the deinterlacing.

While I’m in Photoshop, I also work on the contrast to open it up a bit for print using levels (not auto-levels). Finally, if I need to scale up, I also use Genuine Fractals, it is a very good and cost effective program.
