  • “Best” way to create a SD DVD out of HDV footage?

Posted by Fotis Vassis on May 26, 2008 at 8:04 pm

It’s nice to have a HDV camcorder but mom and dad at hometown finally made their move to abandon the VCR and got a DVD player! All they want is to see their grandchildren in dvd.

So, should I start with a SD DVD project and import the HDV 1440×1080 footage in it and render to dvd, or should I start by using a HDV project and then render downscaling to SD DVD mpeg2?

And something else, I am using a friends HDR-HC9 camcorder which also records in DV format. Am I right to assume that creating a SD DVD using HDV footage will look better than if I shot directly in DV format? ( I still like DV because of its PCM 16bit stereo)

To future-proof yourself, create it in HDV and render to SD.
When you finally get a Blu-ray burner, you’ll be ready to go for that format.

Your assumption about SD from HDV is correct.

The other advantage you have with doing it this way, due to the increased resolution, is that you can pan/crop footage as needed.

It should be noted that when you render to DVD from an HDV project you must check the Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox) option. Otherwise you will get black pillarboxing on either side of your video because HDV 16:9 and DVD 16:9 are slightly different aspects.

Thank you all. I think the pillarboxes (if I don’t check the stretch option) are very small (thin). Isn’t that right?

Yes, the pillarboxing is just tiny strips. Most people would probably not even notice them on a TV unless you pointed it out.
