Best way to capture a sunset
I want to capture a sunset for my part of my school project video. I’m using a panasonic DVX 100a and I would like to set the camera in front of my college and record the sun setting through the windows of the school. (There is a hallway of all windows and you can see the sun setting through it. The windows are treated, so they are slightly darker than regular windows.)
I want to let the camera record for about an hour until it gets dark and the lights on the college show up. Then I’ll capture the footage in Final Cut Pro and speed it up so the sunset is about 5 to 10 seconds long.
I wondering what the best settings are to use on the camera to capture this.

When you white balance, use a small piece of 1/8 to 1/4 CTO (correct to orange) gel; this will add warmth to the shot, especially since you’re shooting through a window.
After you do your white balance, set the iris to auto; it will adjust as the sun sets.
Also, as another option to roll an hour of tape and speed it up in post, you can set the camera to intermittent recording, a simplified version of time lapse. Under the “Interval Rec” setting of the Recording Setup screen in the menu settings, you can set up to record a set length (15, 30, 45, or 60 frames: “Rec Time”) at a given interval (every 30 seconds, every 60 seconds, every five minutes, or every 10 minutes: “Interval Time”)
