April 7, 2009 at 2:30 pmhere is a good tutorial for an easy way to create junk mattes to aid in keying. it’s a very good technique and will almost always help in creating a better key than without creating a junk matte.
the best keyer that comes with ae in keylight (its’ also the one discussed briefly in that tutorial). you may want to read the users guide to better understand some of the features in the effect. if you don’t have it you can download it here.
basically you’ll just pick the color that you’ll want to key, the effect will automatically despill that color from the subject. after that its a matter of tweaking the screen matte settings in the effect to clean, tighten and smooth the matte. there are many other setting you can tweak to further refine the key, spill suppression and some other color adjustments, but that’s the basics.
the best way to get a good key, is not the software as much as it is the setup and lighting and the quality of the footage (i.e. as lightly compressed as possible, standard dv or hdv are not good formats for keying).

April 11, 2009 at 1:15 amKevin and Dave are definitely pointing you in the right direction. There are some tips about keying green screen footage in After Effects Help, including links to some free chapters online from experts like Mark Christiansen.
That page also has some tips and links regarding the all-important suggestion to plan and shoot for color keying from the beginning.
