  best subtitle format for DVD players? (and software?)

  Hi, I’m about to release my first DVD set but have encountered an unexpected stumbling block in form of subtitles. The software I was using (Adobe Premiere Elements 11) can’t do them, Premiere Pro CC only does Closed Captions, quite a few hours of online research has led me to be very confused about formats…

  Can anyone tell me what subtitle format will give the least compatibility problems for DVD players? I’ve heard .srt format is problematic.

  I also need new software to write the necessary DVDs/image files with DVD menus and subtitle tracks. Does anyone have any recommendations?
