Best software to re-encode for Vegas to use

Have you tried using Handbrake? I used it once and it worked well. Plus, it’s free!

I believe I may have suggested it and I usually only suggest something after I’ve tried it myself and seen that it works. Why don’t you explain the issue you are having understanding how it works and we’ll help you understand it. Also if you can point me to the original thread so I can read what I suggested that would be helpful to.

I gotta disagree there. x264 is about the best video encoder out there. Quality or size. Whatever you are going for. Audio is more problematic with Handbrake as no PCM output option is available.

Of course one may not want to edit AVC/H.264 video as it can be slower. Encoding to Baseline profile solves that.

Two odd things, Blackmagic ATEM records to 1920×1088 instead of 1080, and when I bring it into Vegas, it plays back at lower frame rates. Not very user friendly for editing.
I tried EZ Encoder lossless, and it works/edits better, but Vegas than sees it as non-standard (1920×1088), where as it see the original file as 1920×1080…I know John said something about flags in the metadata and Vegas not having all it needs for using the MOV wrapped in a MP4 properly, so I don’t understand why the original file is seen as standard 1080p yet the lossless version is seen as 1088.
Cineform is part of GoPro now, at least from my searching, and that program doesn’t like the files either, and I don’t understand how to use Avidemux for re-encoding to another file format.
I also use another HD hardware encoder called Avermedia and the footage is ALMOST as good, but I would like to resolve the ATEM issue if possible.
My results with Handbrake (and I use it a TON), are diminished video quality, at least for me, unacceptable at this stage in editing..

And as of course, after 2 emails and no reply from Blackmagic, I don’ think they are interested in the problem.

I looked at the original thread and downloaded the file you uploaded and here is a screen shot of using avidemux to convert the QT MOV file to a generic MP4, which Vegas uses its own internal decoders.

I verified that with the original file Vegas was using Quicktime, and the file output from Avidemux, Vegas used its own internal decoders. In theory you should get a little better performance from the internal decoders.

No transcoding was done. The source media video and audio was simply re-muxed.

As Norman points out, set the video to COPY and the audio to COPY and the format to MP4 and press Save and it will remux the file in a few seconds and it will play fine in Vegas Pro after that. Here are the steps again:

Found another question, Vegas is seeing this a 1920×1088 now instead of 1920×1080 as it did prior to re-muxing. I found this really odd. In windows, it sees both files as 1920×1088, in Vegas the un-re-muxed file is seen as 1920×1080 but the remux is 1920×1088…

Any thoughts?
