Best / simplest audio solution into ATEM Television Studio?

Thinks again Mike. Can you suggest a De-embedder? Am not a sound chap. Do have Behringer SRC2946 that I bought with Yamaha mixer before i knew Atem didn’t need them. Otherwise yes,, buy HDMI monitor

I’ll have to get with our engineer for a good de-embedder, but, since you have the Yamaha and Behringer, you already have all the equipment you need.

Connect the mics to the Yamaha, Yamaha to the Behringer, Behringer XLR to the AES input of the TVS. If you have audio delay, the Behringer can fixed that.

Also, now you can monitor audio via the Behringers other outputs, such as S/PDIF out to an audio receiver.

This is the correct way for audio, as now you can control the mix properly and quickly (via the Yamaha mixer). Plus, you can add more audio sources, depending upon how many channels your mixer has. In our studio, that’s exactly how we do it (and we too have a Yamaha mixer).

EDIT:
I need to correct a couple of things:

1. That Behringer model does not do audio delay, the DEQ2496 does, but you may not have a problem with audio delay.

2. To get audio from the Behringer to the TVS, use the RCA digital output from the Behringer (with a RCA to BNC cable). This way, you don’t need an impedance matcher, as the Behringer’s output is 75ohms, the same as the TVS’s AES input.

3. The Behringer has a headphone output to monitor audio.

We use wirecast to encode our streams, you can monitor the sound on it and it also has an audio delay feature – up to 1s. Touch wood we have never had any issues with it and the ATEM TVS. We are using Blackmagic Intensity Extreme’s to get the video in but have used intensity pro on Windows machines too with no problems.

We used Flash Media Encoder for a while but found it frustrating and wirecast has been well worth the outlay.

We pump the sound in via the jacks on our HDMI-SDI converters but using the mic inputs on your cameras would do the same job. We have also used the inputs on the breakout cable with the extremes but doing it this way means you cannot record sound directly from the TVS via the USB connection.

sorry .. I am buying now the ATEM Television Studio and I am a bit confused on what could be my best setup. My goal is a small portable setup for small jobs. I understand that later firmware updates get audio from HDMI and HD-SDi streams. I immagine it is possible to choose one of the audio streams as a master so you switch cameras but keep the same audio. If I go from the line mixer into the nearest camera’s XLR inputs I will be gettin master audio on that camera… Still I could have delay though because we are not talking of the camera mic audio.. or no?
Also I am interested in WIRECAST.. how does it work with ATEM.. can you use that software instead of ATEM controller software or is it just for recording video? I am new to this kind of configuratiions so I don’t understand… I can use ATEM with other softwares? I can control effects, transitions etc.. on wire cast? What about this 1s delay in wire cast.. is it good?

If wirecast works fine and I can put audio into one camera to get it back together with the video.. I will not need Behringer (neither SCR2496 or DEQ2496.. confirmed?). So basically I just need the ATEM and that’s it ?

Hi Marcello,

We have used the set up you describe with no delay issues. Wirecast has a delay option for sound anyway so it can be fixed if there is an issue.

Mostly we put the feed into one of the blackmagic mini converters we use for sending hdmi camera feeds via sdi.

If we are only streaming and not recording then we put the sound directly into the Blackmagic Intensity Extreme that we use to capture the video from the TVS.

Oh and wirecast can be used for switching if you have more than one video feed into your computer but it will not control the TVS. To be honest it is a bit clunky anyway, you are much better using the TVS.

Sometimes we will have a second camera connected directly to the computer if we want picture in picture which wirecast has but the TVS does not.

Yes.. this is what i don’t entirely get….
ATEM is basically a 6 input device so in theory I could use Wirecast for “effects” (PIP and so) and for sound delay… but you’re telling me it’s chunky.. so in the end.. regarding effects I just have to go with ATEM and regarding delay (if any) I’ll have to get an hardware like Behringer DEQ2496 i guess.
An inbetween direct camera for PIP is not really a solution I think… just complicates all because you could do PIP only with that camera and you need the two softwares on at the same time, etc…
