  • Best / simplest audio solution into ATEM Television Studio?

Posted by Mark Slocombe on September 26, 2012 at 6:14 pm

Just got TV Studio for conference / meeting webcasting, Using XDCAM EX1 cameras – SDI into Atem for video.

We have 2 Sennheiser K66 boom mics. Am thinking simplest audio solution using our kit is to plug mics into another camera (JVC GYHM100) that has HDMI out, and send that to HDMI in on ATEM.If we do that – I assume the sound will be in sync – correct?

Another solution – we bought Yamaha mixer and Behringer SRC2496 as suggested by BlackMagic.

But how does the audio get from Behringer’s analog XLR twin outputs to Atem’s AES EBU input?

Is this more complicated solution advantageous, given our events’ audio levels are very uniform?

Answering myself – I just discovered that SDi outputs from the EX1 cameras also carry the audio from the cameras – I had no idea…

Also, if you decide to use the Behringer SRC2496, use the RCA digital output into the AES input of the ATEM. Basically, a cable with a RCA adapter on one end, and a BNC adapter on the other end.

    EDIT:
I take that back. It looks like on the Behringer that AES is output via the XLR output. So you would need a cable with XLR on one end, and BNC on the other.

The TVS has only digital audio input. I don’t know that it does anything with the audio data coming in on an SDI or HDMI video input.

Furthermore, “sync” implies that you are delaying the audio signal so that it matches the video delay and everything is synchronized at the output of the switcher. None of your proposed solutions provides the necessary audio delay.

OTOH, the Behringer Ultracurve Pro DEQ2496 is reputed to provide both analog to digital conversion AND audio signal delay.

Thanks Richard, in my brief testing today the SDI audio from my cameras does appear to carry through the ATEM and looked in sync. But testing wasn’t very scientific as other issues loomed larger and diverted attention.

Am sending the ATEM output to Adobe Flash Live Media Encoder to stream for webcasting, but experienced loss of preview in Adobe FLME, streaming stoppage / restarts, and terrible encode results from the ATEM (grey stripes on switcher cuts). So am off to ATEM users forum for advice.

Yes, with a firmware update a month or so ago, SDI and HDMI now passes audio on the inputs of all ATEMs. If it’s coming over SDI or HDMI, it should be in sync.

Cheers – audio is looking good, except that as I am sending it with video to Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder for streaming, I can’t see any way to monitor the audio that’s being recorded and output, aurally.

Go HDMI program out of the ATEM into a monitor with speakers, that’ll have audio. You’ll just have to trust that audio is being streamed as well. To test it, use another computer to download the stream.

Ta, I also have a h4n recorder – can Hdmi audio out of Atem be converted to xlr in to h4n for monitoring?

Usually would monitor the webcast as audience sees it – but here we will have very limited bandwidth for streaming so don’t want to rob ourselves by monitoring.

Easiest way is to use the SDI Program output, and then go into a de-embedder (which splits the video and audio).

I still think the cheapest way is to use HDMI, either going into a HDMI monitor with speakers, or if you just want audio, an audio receiver with HDMI inputs. You could always add a monitor for video later going that route.
