    Hello,
I need to export a 4-minute clip that can be downloaded from my FTP. I’m trying to find the best codec/settings to create a clip about 400GB. It’s a talking head, so it should compress well. It will be shown on a big-screen in the Phillipines (I’m in the U.S.), which is why I want to preserve as much quality as possible. Because of the short turnaround, I can’t Fed Ex a DVD.

I’ve tried QT with Sorenson 3 at 50% quality and that’s ugly, but probably useable. I plan to create an MPEG2 for them to burn to a DVD, but I’d like to have a backup codec.

    Thanks!

I’m guessing you meant 400 megs. You could try the Windows Media HD from Adobe Encoder, or Divx. These do fairely well in high compression. All depends on how big that screen is. I’ve played Divx videos on a 16’x9′ screen. It held up pretty well.

    Vince,
Right, 400MB, not GB…sorry for the brain fart! Can someone play a Divx clipo without downloading a Divx decoder? Thanks!

They will likely have to download the Divx player and/or codec although more and more players do come with it.

Or you could just download the codec and include it with the video.

If it’s a client, I probably wouln’t get them involded with that, but if it’s someone you know it’s a really easy one step install.

I would try the Windows Media HD export as well, I know you are on a deadline, but for that kind of size limit, that may be one of the few options you have available to try out. The highest setting should get you a pretty good result at a small size.

If I undertand right, this will be played right out of a computer to screen right ?

In that case, I would tell them to download, or include a program called zoom player (There’s a free version)

It’ ll play Divx right out of the box, and best of all you can pause it in full screen mode ready to play for an audience.

Windows Media is very bad at that. Annoying status bar stay there for a while, and you can’t pause it in full screen…

    Cheers,

    Vince

    Vince,
Thank you! The Windows Media looks great! I ended up giving them MPEG1, MPEG2 and WMV. The Windows Media clips is surprising because it’s only 50MB/minute at 640×480 with good quality.

    I appreciate the input!
