best resource for studying broadcast graphics techniques
This is kind of a silly question but what the heck…
I’ve spent the day looking at various resources around the net and I’m trying to find a good resource to learn how to make some of the staples of broadcast graphics or news openings like the swooshes that streak across the screen or the moving blurry background images. I have a bunch of stuff I need to make for a corporate gig and it’s basically static text that I’m animating with Zaxwerks ProAnimator so I wanted to throw in some of the widgets of broadcast graphics in the background just to give it a little kick. Is there a good resource (book, website, dvd, etc.) that can give me some pointers in how to make some of those things?

Well, there’s no shame in buying stuff first and then learning as well.

You can preview backgrounds, swipes, elements etc and incorporating them is real easy.. you just import the quicktime as an asset, stick it on a layer and voila!
Sometimes hard to follow if not versed well in AE, but these are great little tutorials for eye candy:

You can make those swishes with Trapcode 3D Stroke or could probably get something similar using the regular Stroke effect (Effects–Generate–Stroke). Keyframe the start and end paramaters and use the tapering as well. Apply a little glow effect and that’s pretty much it.

Take a look at some of the Andrew Kramer tutorials over at videocopilot.net. There are a lot of great techniques there!
