Best render setting (non-internet)
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on August 27, 2012 at 2:18 pmHi everyone,
I usually render using Main Concept mp4/internet template as the vids are usually destined for the web. (mp4=good compression too!)
I have a case where the client also wants to present the video from her laptop. Is the MC/Internet still the way to go or is there a better render template/file type for this purpose (High Quality)?
Cheers,
Gilles

There is no difference between the Internet and a laptop. It is all playing on the laptop. Give her the same file.

I thought perhaps the the quality would be lower with the Internet template.Which bitrate would you recommend for this laptop viewing render?

That depends on if she has a cheap $499 laptop or a $1499 laptop. To play it safe, use 3-4Mbps but a good laptop should be able to easily play 6-8Mbps.

Makes sense.
I’ll modify the MC template with an avg of 6 and max of 8 then. (Assuming this is what you meant with “6-8”)Gilles

August 29, 2012 at 8:05 amrendering a file for the client’s laptop i would think of codec issues not the bitrate. you never know what your client’s lap is equipped with. will he see the video or only hear the audio… i would go for wmv and/or dvd here. about bitrate? hmmm, always keep it as high as you can for the format you render…

This is a good point, you might want to ask your client what OS they are using because WMV will not play back on Macs without additional software and DVD is not supported on many computers without DVD player software because of the MPEG-2 licenses (although Windows 7/Vista might now support this out-of-the-box). MPEG4 will play back on every OS regardless if the client has Windows, Mac, or Linux which makes it a good universal format but they may need to download a codec the first time they play it if their computer is very old.
The reason I recommend MPEG4 is because it’s the same file that you used for the Internet which means the customer is getting the exact same quality they are use to seeing and it’s no additional work for you.

John, do you mean newer PCs come with mp4 built-in?
Also, if an older laptop does not have the codec, how does one get the codec for mp4? I know there are codec packs but they load more than required.
