  • Best Recipe for taking 4:3 SD project to HD

Sorry for the slightly OT post but I have been having a debate with several coworkers on the best way to take a 4:3 SD Project to 16×9 HD. I would appreciate any input or advice. The debate centers around whether or not it’s just better to center punch the 4:3 spot and let it play with curtains or to try and make it a 16×9 SD spot which would lose part of the frame and affect the quality because of the additional scaling.

Please let me know how you would rank the following methods for delivering in HD from SD (Let’s assume D1 Source and DVC Pro HD 720 as the HD format):

    1) Create spot at 16×9 – While this is not possible for this particular project, 16×9 SD will upconvert much better than any other SD source
    2) Center punch 4:3 SD which would result in curtains but retain all frame information and require less scaling
    3) Upconvert entire spot to appropriate width which would result in the most scaling and cropping
    4) Squeeze pictures vertically or horizontally distorting image – No really an option

    Thx,

    Christian

I would rate them in the same order you have in your post. Of course, the client has the final say.

If you’re using video that was shot SD, then it’s almost a wash. But if you have the original project with decent resolution images, you can duplicate your comp and make it 1280×720 and then do one of two things.

You can move your camera to reframe the shot (assuming you have a camera) or put a null in the scene, parent everything to that Null, then rescale the null until everything looks pretty good in the frame.

If everything has been designed with SD in mind, then you might need to do a lot of rearranging but these two methods have worked for me on numerous occasions.
