  • Best option for mac to pc delivery? AVI stops short!

Hello.. Every time I export an avi from fcp it plays for a small proportion of the length it’s supposed to be.I have been swatting up online and see that avi exporting from fcp has a 4gb size limit. Is this true? And if so, please help me… my client has a pc, I have a mac and I’m trying to provide him with a good quality trailer on disc of about 6 minutes in length. What are my options please? He couldn’t open the quicktime I sent..even though his pc has quicktime (?) Thanks in advance..i’m super stuck..it’s getting embarrassing!

Part of the problem is that Mac OS X only supports writing to the FAT 32 file system, which has a hard file size limit of 4GB (regardless of file type). Your Quicktime file is probably being truncated or split by the file system, hence the inability of the PC to open it properly.

You should probably invest in Paragon NTFS, which allows Mac OS X to write to NTFS-formatted drives:

What type of footage are you exporting – SD or HD, DV, Uncompressed, etc.? That will help determine the proper codec to use for delivery.

And does your client have the latest QT update, or an old version? What kind of QT did you try to give them, H.264, Sorenson, MP4? You need QT7 for example, to play H.264. What about encoding to Windows Media for a PC client?

I’m shooting HDV and down converting to SD in fcp studio 5.1.4 .It’s a sample reel (trailer for simplicity) that he’d like to bung on his website, and youtube. I’ve always ‘delivered’ quicktimes (dv pal) to clients…and film to festivals etc and never had a problem. I just need to get him the best quality video that he can then do what he likes with. In fact in general I’d like to be exporting the best possible NOT QUICKTIME video to disc for clients without them experiencing problems like this…pc or mac?!

Any help vital and very welcome..thank you!

Thank you. I have asked if he (my client) has the latest version of quicktime but the answer was ‘wooly’. Thanks for alternative export method, can I do this via quicktime conversion? I’m out of my usual tried and tested comfort zone. Given the system i’m working on how should i proceed?

Flip4Mac, the plug-in for FCP that allows exporting to Windows Media, is commonly used. It’s a plug-in for applications that use QT and shows up as an option in FCP QT conversion (Windows Media).

There are other products, like Episode and Squeeze, that also do it, but cost a bunch more. The cheapest, high-quality thing is to ask your client to open QT on his machine and look at About QuickTime. The version is right there for anyone to see. If he has version 7, you should be able to give him a high-quality H.264 QT, if he has v6, give him an MP4 or Sorenson V3 QT instead.

What do you have against Quicktime? Quicktime is just a wrapper that supports many codecs. It’s much more flexible than .avi or .wmv, and it doesn’t depend on proprietary codecs.

To insure that the client has the latest version of quicktime, just ask them to download and instal the latest version of iTunes quicktime will get installed at the same time.
