There are no pro LCD broadcast monitors for under $1k. You can find a good Plasma in that price range, or you can find a used CRT.

Oh, yes you got that right, sorry I meant LCD for normal computer use (MAC PRO) for lots of graphics and video editing using FC Studio 3…I know for viewing correct video color I need something like a $3-$4000 broadcast monitor.

Looking for two new/good computer monitors each under $1000. I currently have a 23″ Apple and a Dell 24″ 2410 (don’t like it – not crisp blacks and pink/green tinit). Apple one is OK but are there better ones for similar price? Would like 2 x 23″ or 24″, or up to 27″ but non-glossy…just wanted your pro opinions.

    Thanks

this is the answer to your question. If you don’t own an AJA/Blackmagic/MOTU/Matrox product with your MAC, then stop reading this right now, because you are an amateur, and don’t deserve this information.

If you have money, the best LCD monitor for the money is from Flanders Scientific. More than Panasonic/JVC/Sony, but worth the money. If you have no money, get the Panasonic TH42PD12UK. $749 at B&H Photo.

If you say “but I don’t have $280 or less for a card to do this” –

Too many cranky pills Bob. An hour and a half before your rant, Kent qualified his request for info on computer monitors to use when editing with FCP, not external grading monitors –

[Kent Beeson] “sorry I meant LCD for normal computer use (MAC PRO) for lots of graphics and video editing using FC Studio 3…I know for viewing correct video color I need something like a $3-$4000 broadcast monitor.”

Much as I love your no nonsense approach, I think poor Kent should have been spared this spray.

Danke Schone Michael – I actually do have Intensity Pro card and do know about Flanders monitor…it’s just I wanted to get other pro opinions on what they have found useful re: computer monitors…

My Dell 2408 wfp went wonky for 6 months, Dell finally said OK, just sent me as a replacement Dell Ultra sharp 24″ 2410 but I and many others find it very tinted pink and green, many posts re: this.

So I wish Apple would make non-glossy 24″ cinema displays – I probably get 2 of those and be done with it. But until then, any other thoughts?

    Thanks

I am using a Dell ultrasharp 24″ and out of the box it was pink. I went into the setup menus and was able to get it closer to correct color. I don’t use it as anything other than a computer monitor and grade on an external via Kona3.

Whilst it was a fiddle, the final image is really nice and not so wonky as to be annoying.

Would love to know the exact settings you did, I’ve played with it for a long while and it’s just not as good as even my Apple 23″ – if you have the time, what are your monitor settings for color, contrast, mode, etc?

    Thanks

I use a 20\” mac, and a 20\” acer for bins and palletes. Looking staight on they are both the same. But you can look at the apple from anywhere, any angle and it looks the same. Look at the acer a few degrees off center and it looks different.

And Bob man that was just rude. I know this is the \”pro\” forum and I\’ve been making money doing professional work at home with a dvcam deck as my interface. I now have a matrox mini so I can do more 24p and hd work and monitor it and grade it quite well on my consumer grade LCD via HDMI. The matrox allows for pretty decent calibration on output – which incidentally my consumer grade LCD was spot on better than my trusty old PVM ever was. I\’m not doing any condition critical overpaid commercial broadcast work. Just corporate work.

I’ve just ordered a Dell 2410 that i want to use as my main monitor (no for color grading) although I would like to connect it to the ioHD through HDMI as well.
It is possible to get a decent calibration this way?
    Cheers,
    rafael
