Editing a DSLR job for a client in Premiere CS4 on his Windows system… he won’t buy Cineform and needless to say I am not buying it for him.

What’s the best free intermediate codec for DSLR footage in PPro CS4 on Windows? Would Avid DNxHD work for this purpose?

Are you wanting to use them as proxies and an offline edit or for complete edit to end?

You could go with JPEG MOV files or high bit rate mpeg-2 CBR.

I use DNxHD for this purpose. I see some loss when choosing the DNxHD 35 setting so I use the 120 setting. Works great.

Yeah I could use it just as a proxy for offline or all the way through, either one is good. Thanks guys! I’ll try DNxHD also but I believe my client is running Windows 7 Home and the DNxHD download page says it won’t work with Home, can anyone verify?

Did some testing today and as it turns out with a powerful/new enough machine, even PPro CS4 handles H.264 like a champ… no need to transcode.

Windows Media Player on the other hand… not so much.
