  • Best format to work in before compression ?

Posted by Ben Matt on December 2, 2008 at 5:00 am

I use AE and when done compress to MPG, MPEG4 and WMV with Sorenson Squeeze. I would like to know what is the best uncompressed format I should save my projects in before bringing them to Sorenson Squeeze for compression ?

I am working on a Windows environment using CS3 production premium.

    Thanks !

Quicktime with the Animation Codec, without a doubt.

Animation codec is visually lossless, meaning there will be absolutely no degradation to your image. At the same time, it does perform non-lossy compression that results in smaller files than plain uncompressed files.

    AVI uncompressed or quicktime None/Animation.

Working on windows, I would choose AVI.
AVI 1080p uncompressed plays realtime on windows, Quicktime 1080p uncompressed won’t (RAID!)
AVI is a native file for windows as QT is native to OSX.

You should try the Blackmagic Uncompressed codecs, they are free, fast and tend to show less banding artefacts compared to the animation-codec.

if you’d like to embed color profiles and work in 16 bit or 32 float you want to use image sequences.
