  • best for rendering: 7200 rpm internal or fw400 external?

    Hi,
    running a 2.2 c2d macbook (not pro).

Any idea if i would have better render times if my files (source and render) were on external firewire drives? (only have FW400 here).

    or USB2?

(I would be comparing a 7200 rpm internal 250 gig drive to whatever fw400 or USB2 external drive is the fastest.)

Would beefing up to 4 gigs ram do anything?

Also, makes me wonder what the Turbo .264 usb hardware device actually does; could something like this be modified to ‘boost’ render times for macbook people?

    Observations/ suggestions welcomed. Thanks

You shouldn’t put any video media on the same drive that OSX and Final Cut Pro live on.

So unlesss you’ve somehow got 2 hard drives in that Macbook, it looks like external is the way to go!

And no, I’m not teasing you…it’s possible:

But I’d still suggest the external drive. Losing the DVD drive isn’t worth it, in my opinion.

Anyway, yes, always make sure it’s 7200 rpm for media drives no matter if it’s internal or external (5400 rpm for OSX drive is ok). And yes, use firewire (not USB).

Never ever put any media on your System Drive. Media only goes on a media drive.

Drive speed has zero influence on render times.
