  • best fcp settings for 1080i footage to 720p output

Hi. A two part question about how I should be setting up my project in fcp:

    1. My first question is related to resolution… my raw footage is 1080i, but my final product will either be viewed on vimeo hd (1280 x 720) or standard def dvd. So, should I just set up my sequences to be hdv 720, or is there a significant benefit of editing in 1080 and then converting to 720 with compressor?

    2. My second question relates to frame rate and interlaced vs. progressive. As I mentioned, my raw footage is interlaced at 60 fps, but what would happen if I set up my edit to be 1080p24 or 720p24? Would changing my sequence setting to progressive 24fps negatively affect my image quality, or would my footage just look a bit more like it was shot on 24p?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

    Hey Nathan,
If your final movie will be 720, edit in a 720 sequence. You can resize the 1080 footage as you want.
You will need to de-interlace all your interlaced material.
Set your sequence as Proress. Forget HDV.

I prefer to edit in the native format, if you shot 1080i HDV, I would cut in 1080i HDV. This avoids unnecessary rendering during the edit. The only time I transcode is if I have strange material (like the h.264 from a Canon 5D MarkII or something).

I would save all the re-sizing/de-interlacing for compressor.

Interesting. Two completely opposing workflow paradigms.

I say, edit native and export to any non-native formats using Compressor or other encoding tools.

    Hi David,
I’m shooting Hd but mostly ending in SD.
Some times I’ve been editing in HD then downscaling in Compressor.
Some times i edit in an SD sequence. I see the advantage that you can resize and re-frame the footage.
Also I prefer don’t downscale the graphics.
