Best external Raid for editing DVC Pro HD on iMac?
While using FCP 6 on my iMac for editing, I’ve previously stored my DVC Pro HD working footage and a backup on two separate external 1TB hard drives. I’m reusing the P2 cards so the backup drive is my “original” footage.
I’m working on my first longform (est. length 60 – 90 minutes) documentary and am running out of space on those drives. The best solution seems to be the purchase of an external Raid to connect via FW800 but I’m unsure of best Raid format (0,1,5, etc.) for my dual purpose of footage backup & storing the footage I’m editing. I’m still logging and transferring so I haven’t dealt with backing up any actual edits yet, but obviously I would also prefer to backup my work to an external drive for safety. I’m thinking 2TB per drive is the minimum size I should consider. The two brands I’ve checked out are G-Technology (my current two drives) and OWC (first read about on this forum).
I’m trying to balance the issues speed, safety, and cost – any suggestions?
