  • Best External FW 400/800 HD External Option?

Posted by Phillr on January 8, 2006 at 7:38 pm

I’m looking to purchase an External FW 400 Hard Drive. I’m a Final Cut editor but taking a few Avid courses in the near future. I’m wondering what the best options out there are, cost is not an issue. Is it possible to purchase a drive that would be compatible with FCP and Avid systems?

I have extensively used Lacie drives to horrendous results (crashes, power failures, etc…), so DEFINIETLY not open to any Lacie suggestions. I’ve read alot about heating issues with FW drives, any available that contain a fan unit (similar to G-RAID FW 800)?

I’ve also read some suggestions that it could be better to purchase the drive and an enclosure seperately. I may prefer to go this route so that I can ensure i’m buying reliable components (enclosure and HD). Any suggestions on awesome enclosures (with fan unit would be cool)? Can any standard hard drive be put into an enclosure, or does it need to be a specific kind (e.g. SATA II drive). Any particular drive specs I should be going for (e.g. cache)?

Also, the place i’m taking my Avid courses only has FW 400 ports on their computers. Is there any downside to using a FW 400 -> 800 cable versus a FW 400->400 cable?

Thanks for any and all tips/suggestions!
