I’m looking to use just external drives for my media, meaning no scuzzy or raid or unity. I’d like to be as mobile with my media as possible since I’ll be moving around from system to system (both PC & Macs) to cut my film.

Not sure what drive/s I should be looking into. Someone suggested the lacie porsche drives but I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision. Budget for drive is under $200 for a decent amount of gigs ~160-200g. (later I’ll purchase more if need be)

*I realize the dangers of having all my media stored on one external drive but at least for now that’s the only choice I have.

    Thanks for the help.

SC, I don’t like the Porsche drives. Seen to many crap out. I picked up a LaCie d2 250G the other day for $143. Take into account the format you are working with also. I know you are uder budget constraints; but to buy cheap drives is to invite disaster. Save a nickel now, pay a dollar later.

SC, good to see you taking that decision so seriously. I like remaining mobile also. Bought a Western Digital Essential 250 GB Ext drive and it’s been really weird. The first files I put there, I have no problem with ON MY LAPTOP. I can go in, access the files and cut. My desktop, however, won’t recognize the drive and when I try to access other files that are in it, while on my laptop, I can’t. Been trying to figure this out for a week now. Naturally, I had to change the name of the subsequent files, but it seems that when I did that, they got corrupted some how. Although I don’t REALLY buy that argument either because when I simply click-on the folders, everything is there and seems to be in place…just cannot access within Avid. And by all systems checks, the drive is working properly. Don’t know if this helps you because on the one hand, it works perfectly and on the other it doesn’t work at all. Be nice if it just worked perfectly.
