  • Best Config for Premier on a older MacPro 8 core 2X 2.28Ghz

I have purchased a new (old) MacPro 8 core XEON 2X 2.8GHZ with 8Gbs of RAM, a 500 Gb hard drive and an ATI 2400 video card. It is running OS 10.9, Maverick

I want to install the Adobe cloud suite primarily for Premiere CS6 and move from my old dual core and FCP 7, and I would appreciate your opinion of what I would need to get this MacPro set up to go?

I will be editing mostly XDCAM footage and only using Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects on mostly straight-forward corporate video projects.

What changes/additions to I need to make to the MacPro 8 core

    Recommended RAM
New Video Board – if so, what?

As many editors, I’m used to FCP 7 but need to finally make the move, and I’d like to keep this transition as simple as possible.

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance.

    Best regards,

I have a MacPro 3,1 8 core and it works great. Here is my config:

    Mac Pro 2.8GHZ 8 core 2008
    256 OWC SSD System Drive
    NVIDIA GTX680 Graphics Card
Areca 1882 SAS Raid Card with Maxx Digital Raid
    16GB Ram

I’m running Premiere Pro CC 2014 and it works very fast on this old machine.

You absolutely need to double the RAM – OWC is your best bet there.

You absolutely need to get a good GPU with Cuda acceleration, such as the GeForce 780 Mac Edition -see the Barefeats review at https://www.barefeats.com/gpuss.html

If you’re a professional user, you need a 4 or 8-drive RAID – SAS connected is best, eSATA, USB 3 and eSATA second best, and Firewire 800 third best.

A Blackmagic I/O device will also be very helpful, especially if you plan to run DaVinci Resolve, which requires a Blackmagic card or device and will not display video monitors at all using AJA, Matrox, or Bluefish devices.

[Greg Jones] “NVIDIA GTX680 Graphics Card”

I also have a GTX 680, but the new 780 Mac Edition is now the top dog.

Thank you very much for your configuration. I have one question: I couldn’t find the NVIDIA GTX680 Graphics Card. Is that an older card? Is there another version that would work?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. This is really helpful!

Now, will this card work with the Mercury Engine in Premier to speed things along?

    Regards,

    Barry

[David Roth Weiss] “You absolutely need to double the RAM”

Yes, at least. 24 or 32 GB of RAM would be better still (especially for After Effects or running multiple production apps at the same time).

Although the Ati cards now work very well with CC using Open CL, I have a Ati 7950 and have no problems with speed in PPpro
