I remember years ago a mac pro tower was the only computer that a professional editor would consider purchasing. However it seems that the imac has stepped up to the plate quite a bit.

Is the imac now considered a reasonable alternative to the mac pro?
    How about the 21.5 inch with ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB and 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 4x2GB?

    Thank You in Advance

Problem with the iMac is storage and video I/O.

Storage is limited to either internal storage on your boot drive or FW800. There are still many more options for a Mac Pro.

Video I/O, if you want to actually monitor the broadcast signal, is limited to just a couple of products where as the Mac Pro has several different options.

But the i7 iMac is a pretty good computer for the money. I would still suggest a Mac Pro for expansion mainly, but it all depends on what tool you want to use for the job.

For me, I use firewire drives and I do not use a an external monitor connected directly to my computer. I often view my timeline looped through a firewire deck that has RCA outputs. I take it this workflow will be viable with an imac as well.

    Right?
