I want to be consistent when I import footage NOT from my DV camera. I was looking for one codec to use to edit with Premiere Pro AND store on external hard drives, ranging from anything I pull in from my DVR, stock footage, occasional Internet videos…

I don’t have the space for uncompressed footage, but I need a happy medium between quality and compression. I have Sorenson Squeeze and MPEG Streamclip for transcoding. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I think your best option here is to keep everything in their original format and use hardrives. I now use SATA drives that I can swap in an external casing. Not that costly if you shop around.

Recompressing to a third party format will not save you much space and will of course affect quality.

I can keep everything in original format, but what about a source that has to “original” video format, like my DVR? I can import with my TV Tuner as a variety of formats, so what works best for editing in Premiere Pro? That format/codec should also be one that I can convert Internet Flash videos to as well (sometimes clients don’t understand delivery vs. source video).

I guess another way to put it: is there one particular codec that I can rely on to edit with, and others PP doesn’t do so well with?

    Thanks!

If you are doing SD 4:3 or SD 16:9, the best format to edit with is MSDV avi.
500gig SataII drives are about $100 nowadays, a eSata enclosure costs about $30, a external bracket to move two internal Sata ports for external use is $8.
