I imagine this is an old question to ask but I couldn’t really find an answer in past posts so… I have a GH-2 and am wondering what the best codec is for editing my footage on my Windows Sony Vegas. Vegas will edit it natively but I hear that’s not the best thing to do. This is all new to me so please expound.
QUESTIONS: 1. What is the BEST codec and WHY?
    2. How do I encode my native video?
    3. Why is editing natively not a good idea?

    Thanks!

Native is fine if your system can handle it. Otherwise Cineform

In general any i-frame based codec (a codec that saves every single frame) is better for editing.
Saves a lot processor-power and RAM, especially when applying effects. In my experience, even if native editing works, editing will be a lot smoother with i-frame footage.

I tried to edit native, had to go with Neoscene, huge improvement in system functionality. Vegas Pro 9, NLE.

Vegas 10d and Premiere 5.03 and 5.5 handle footage from the GH1 and GH2 just fine.
