Best approach for editing with 1080 and 720×486 footage?
Hi,
I’m about to start editing a 16:9 NTSC project that’s to be delivered initially in letterbox format on Beta but may be required in a web format later.
I have 1080 footage from a Canon 7D at 29.97fps.
I also have SD, 29.97fps footage that was shot in 16:9 but is now in a ProRes 720×486 interlaced format, after being transferred from a beta tape.
Should I convert the SD footage to 16:9, and de-interlace it at the same time for web use later? Is Compressor best for this?
Any tips regarding sequence settings and pitfalls to avoid would be appreciated.

When you ask ‘Which do you the most of?’ are you asking which footage will I be using the most of? If so, the 1080 footage is what I’m using the most, the SD footage will be used sparingly.

Yes, to the amount of Footage.
Well, if you truly are only going to SD Tape and web then I would edit in an SD sequence.
You’ll be able to move the HD material around and re-frame all you want.However, the HD is Progressive.
Drop a SD clip in a new sequence and let FCP match it.
Next delete the clip back out.
You can make you SD stuff Anamorphic easy enough in FCP. Check the box in the browser. Change the clips b/4 putting back in sequence.
Next drop in a 1080 clip with some motion in it and render it.
See how it looks. It might be fine due to the 29.97When the edit is done, change the compressor to prores422 and fully render all and export using current settings.
Take that file into your compression program to make the deliverables.Chris Tompkins

I see you SD is already Prores, no need to change the compressor after the edit.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply Chris, I followed what you said and it’s looking good.
I rendered and exported a clip, the SD footage has the interlaced lines while the 1080 stuff has some lines visible but not as much as the SD. I’m guessing that this is OK and the progressive footage is now interlaced?
As this is my first time delivering to tape (it’s usually web delivery) what am I looking to do with Compressor to make it suitable for delivery?
As I’ll be putting the finished edit on a hard drive for someone to put onto Beta for me, I thought exporting using the current settings would be good enough for this.

Are you viewing this on an external video monitor?
Make sure your Sequence settings has Anamorphic checked.

Not on a broadcast monitor, no, only on a LCD monitor.
Also, I’m working in a PAL country so NTSC equipment isn’t handy.
