I read on a post here about a month ago about someone making a custom photoshop mask and then importing it into ae. What is the purpose of this when you can create any style (size, shape) mask you want right in ae? thanks

It saves processing time in Ae by reading the Photoshop file info. It’s just one more thing Ae doesn’t have to figure out.
