November 7, 2007 at 8:55 pmWon’t play is not enough information. You press play and it doesn’t move or the screen is blank or white or what. What happens when you try to play it?
All the best,

November 7, 2007 at 8:58 pmYou’re thinking about this backwards. Tom is correct. Keep the quality HIGH, EDIT, then COMPRESS. Do not try to edit a compressed file!
Again, try DV size and codec first (as this will be the easiest for FC) as a test. Once you understand that workflow, you should be able to do what you need.
Good Luck,

November 7, 2007 at 9:17 pmI did a Snapz capture of my 1024×768 Keynote presentation (35 sec). It has a Mac Audio track and a Mic track. I captured it at 20 fps with smoothing turned on.
I dubbed the capture as PHOTO – jpeg with both audio tracks on.
It created a QT movie. In FC I imported the .mov.
First I tried to double click the clip in the browser. I could see the start of the movie in the viewer with sprocket holes on the left. I click the play button. The sprockets go away but the play head doesn’t move. If I move the scrubber wheel, I can see the movie in the viewer wherever I stop.
Next, I dragged the clip into the time line. It doesn’t play in the viewer. It shows unrendered when I click play in the canvas. I can see a frame of the show when I click the play button a second time.

November 7, 2007 at 9:24 pmYou have to create sequence settings that match exactly your material. The frame rate is not a standard frame so you’ll always have to render the material.
All the best,

November 7, 2007 at 10:12 pmI changed the sequence settings to match a new Snaz movie. It was custom size 1024×768, 24 fps, 48 mHz sudio, 16 bit, Photo – jpeg compressor.
Imported into FC. Same results. I’m lost. Is there anyone near Milwaukee Wisconsin that I can hire???
I also got an error message that said I was out of memory. Pretty strange since I had just turned on the Mac a couple minutes before. It is a dual quad processor with 9 gig or RAM. Can I allocate RAM to FC like we used to do with PhotoShop? Is that a problem?

November 8, 2007 at 1:56 amTry this– in Keynote, File-Export, in formats drop down choose Custom this will open another dialogue that will let you customize your export to any size, codec, and quality. The full list of codecs from FCP will be available.
Good Luck

Slow down…
First off DO NOT do a screen Capture of keynote
Simple Choose File Export QuickTime
And choose manual settings…
You can export at Exactly the right frame rate and codec
This procedure is covered in detail in both the iWork o6 and iWork 08 books
You can also record any timing you need with iWork 08 and those will be respected by the exported movie

November 8, 2007 at 2:04 amHi Richard,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don’t think that will work.
My Keynote presentation is more than just a timed show. No 2 slides are up for the same duration. Some slides have up to 40 builds in them with sound bites and video clips contained in the show.
I was doing the screen capture because I was putting a narration track on it as I went through the presentation.

November 8, 2007 at 2:07 amI just got a dot Mac account.
How can I put a sample of the QuickTime movie on the web so that all of you can see the complexities?

I believe that you can set all that in keynote and the video export will handle all the sound bites fine. PLUS you you can pick the export setting right from keynote. Then pull that file into FCP and lay a VO to it.
