Basic Compositing Question
Apple’s Motion has a blending mode called “Behind.” It places an object behind all others, regardless of its position in the layers palette. What would the equivalent of that be in After Effects?
I have two videos and a “transition” video that I made in motion. I want that transition video to transition me from one video to the other, much like a wipe.
However, I’m getting confused as to the order of the layers in After Effects and what blending modes everything should be set at.
When my transition movie is set to “Stencil Alpha,” it reveals clip #2 below it through the alpha channel (white part) in the image. However, I can’t seem to composite this over clip #1. I’m only able to see the black part behind the transition clip. I’m able to achieve the effect by using the “Behind” blend mode in Motion, but I would be surprised if there isn’t a way of doing this in After Effects.

AE has no mode like that (sorry), unless you make the layer 3D and move its Z-position behind another 3D layer.
You might want to look up “track matte” in the help, in order to have a matte affect only the layer below it. Stencil Alpha might not do it for you, since it affects all layers below.
