Barefeats has good things to say about ProAvio Raids in a recent article. Is anyone using ProAvio arrays with their Mac & FCP? Just curious, seems to be a lot of bang for the buck if they are solid array systems. I will be ordering an array soon and was curious to hear from anyone using one now.

Second question, obviously I am on somewhat for a budget. If I stripe 3 1TB drives inside a new Mac Pro, is there big hit using a software raid config. Also, I will use raid 0. If I have a problem, I can re-capture the program if need be. Some say that you will take a performance hit if you do not use a raid card. How bad is it really?

I want all the performance that I can get for the money. However, I do not plan to do any uncompressed HD. Prores will probably be the best quality I will need. Most of the time it will be XDcam HD.

Also, please feel free to suggest the most “bang for the buck” in regard to storage for my new MacPro.

I also edit XDCam and DVCPro HD on a MacPro Quad 2.66 with 3 – 1TB drives software striped Raid 0 + my system drive. No problems yet, but I always backup my media onto an OWC 2 TB external to be safe. Performance is a bit slower than at my main job, but it does not bother me that much. I’m sure a raid card would beef up performance, as for numbers it would depend on the card. Been looking at one from Cal Digit, but I have put that purchase on hold for now.
