  • Banding problem: Shine plug-in

    Hi,
I’m having banding issues using the Shine plug-in. It’s a simple white “ray sweep” effect under white text over a black background. It looks fine on the computer monitor but shows the banding on an NTSC monitor. It’s a 720×480 comp in AE 6.5. I’ve tried everything from lowering overall white levels, broadcast safe effects, blurring to changing the project to 16bit. Nothing seems to affect it. Seems like a simple fix to me, but I can’t figure it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Try adding a little bit of HSL noise (at 16bpc) until it goes away.

Keep in mind that banding happens easily with monochromatic gradients.

For more info, search the COW for “banding”, if you haven’t already.

are you using one, three or five color option?
if you’re using one or three try switching to 5 and set the colors properly. than instead of streaching one color in creating the light (that is when the banding appears) you use 5 different colors, therefore there is less “streaching” in the color, and the colors blend.

    maybe it will help.
    cheers

    Hey,
That HLS noise was the ticket!!! I tried to do the color gradient thingy, but because it was just white on black, it didn’t help much (I tried to put some gray in there, but nothin’ helped).
    Anyooo, problem solved! Thanks!
