  • Banding from several feathered masks (on solids) even in 16-bit

I have searched the posts for “banding” and tried noise, and using a gaussian blur as a solid but nothing is working.

I have 3 solids with feathered masks that I am using to create a vignette. Even with just one of the layers soloed I am getting the banding, sometimes on my monitor but especially on the NTSC Video Monitor.

My comp is set to 16-bit but I know that the masks are only 8-bit.

Please help! Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Two options…

Free – Duplicate your layer. Remove the feathering from the mask on the top layer, and completely remove the mask on the bottom layer. On the bottom layer apply an alpha track matte. Then add a fast blur to the top layer to feather the mask 16bit. It will feather a bit outwards, so control this by pulling in the “Mask Embiggen” parameter**.

Plug-in – Use the Red Giant Key Correct Matte Feather plug-in. This is similar to Composite Wizard Matte Feather, but runs 16bit. It has a lot of control for keeping corners hard and controlling the feather slope. IMO it is a must-have.

** This is now called Mask Expansion to be grammatically correct. To see it in it’s proper CoSA/Homer Simpson pronunciation, command/option/shift click on the word Mask Expandion, twirl it closed then twirl it back open =).

WOw that is hillarious! Thanks for showing that to me.

I was able to fix it before I read your post by creating a RAMP (16-bit) instead of a feathered Mask and then using De-Band from tinderbox over the whole comp.

    I appreciate your help though!
