    Hey all,

I’m working at a church that uses Ikegami HL 45AW cameras and does live switching, recording to Beta SP.

I have to use these tapes to package a show for SD broadcast.

My issue is video quality. I’ve tried Pro-Res, Pro Res (HQ), and 8-Bit Uncompressed and am currently ingesting 10-Bit Uncompressed. All of this using AJA VTR Xchange (our edit suites are connected to the decks via AJA Io boxes).

All of the previous ingests give me footage that looks brassy in FCP and PPro CS 5.5(we’ve recently started using it, having switched over from FCP 6.0.6). I’ve tried color-correcting in both FCP and PPro, with slightly better success in FCP (mainly because I’m more familiar with the controls), but the video still has a brassy-ness to it.

While the footage is a bit over-exposed when played to a monitor from the tape, it still looks considerably better than any of my ingests.

Is there anything I can do to improve the image quality in post?

Have you hooked the output of the AJA to a scope and sent test patterns (color bars) through it?

Sadly, no scope to hook up. Another issue I have is no monitor. I have to rely on the scopes within PPro and hope that my final output looks decent.

Does your switcher have the ability to output color bars? If so, output the color bars, record it BetaSP, ingest that to Premiere Pro, and then look at the scopes. That should tell you if things are off.

William, I was just about to get rid of them but I have here a Waveform monitor and Vectorscope (Tectronix 1720 and 1730 in rack mount config). I would be happy for you to have them if they would help. You would just have to pay shipping. I’m in LA.

    Hey there,

Thanks very much for the offer. It turns out there were some incorrect settings on the box that manages output from the Beta decks. A few minor chroma and luma tweaks and the ingest looks fantastic… okay, as fantastic as Beta SP can look.

Thanks again for all the assistance.

William seems to be all set, but I’m interested if you’re trying to get rid of them. Question, why aren’t you selling them, given that I see the same scopes for sale on eBay for $600 a piece?
