Bad Audio out of Firewire, Anyone Else???
So a couple of months ago, this intermitent problem started showing up: When I use firewire audio out of FCP for monitoring, the picture plays back fine but the audio is loud digital garbage. Audio out of my AJA card is always fine.
It goes away for awhile if I close FCP and trash my preferences, but I’m sick of always trashing my preferences.
I think it showed up after an update of either QT or FCP (I’m running the most current versions of both), but if it were a software based problem, wouldn’t a lot more people be complaining about it?
Any insight would help. Thanks…

If it’s a software problem, it’s likely an installation problem. Not a bug or we’d all have the problem… right?
So might perform a clean install of the software to see if that’s where the problem lies, but before you do, reset your SMU or PMU on your machine. Search Apple’s Support docs on their site in the support area to find out how to do this with your particular mac. It’s easy to do but different from machine to machine. It resets the power management on that FW bus of yours, and may be all you need to do.

Are you using a DVCPRo HD deck and an intel mac for firewire monitoring by chance?

I am using a new Quad Intel mac going into a JVC HDV deck. So, no one else is experiencing this?

I have experienced this with an Aj1400 DVCPRo HD deck and intel macs. I have not heard a definitive answer, but the RUMOR is that it’s a word clock (sync) issue between the mac and firewire device.

That would be ironic if that were the case here because the JVC deck doesn’t even have a sync input! I’m going to try a fresh install…

WEll, when using firewire, you can’t sync a 1400 either. That’s the problem. SUPPOSEDLY there’s a miscommunication between the deck and computer.
Good luck with the fresh install. Let me know if it works. It didn’t make a difference for the Panasonic. Everything comes in fine, but goes out garbage.
